Improvements in prescription medication compliance require an enhanced understanding of behaviours. The usual "loyalty" approaches are generally not effective. As behavioural scientists, we have developed many creative initiatives that have resulted in significant and sustained compliance enhancement.

Rx Noncompliance Means Millions Lost

Compliance typically drops off over time.  In this figure, showing a 1995 Saskatchewan study of cholesterol-lowering medications, compliance dropped to 10% after 26 months, with an average compliance level of approximately 35%.

This pattern of noncompliance represents a significant level of unrealized sales potential:

  • Area under the curve (AUC) = Patients achieving disease/symptom control and source of current sales revenue.
  • Area above the curve (AAC) = lost sales revenue due to noncompliance or potential incremental sales from compliance initiatives

The Impact of A Successful Compliance Initiative

The impact of a successful compliance initiative improves patient health, as measured through variables such as:

  • Percentage of medications taken as intended
  • Number of emergency physicians and ER visits
  • Patient confidence in their ability to self-manage their condition

A good compliance initiative will also:

  • Increase revenue
  • Increase number of prescriptions filled
  • Provide a highly valuable data base about patient characteristics and behaviour

How We Can Help

We can help to improve patient health and reduce these losses. Through statistical curve analysis and projection, we can determine not only what the unrealized sales potential of your product is, but also the impact of a successful compliance program on your bottom line. We can also help to integrate the program into a successful overall marketing strategy with our patient centered marketing approach.

Contact us for a free consultation, and we will assist in remedying the current situation by improving both corporate and public health.
